Worth the risk?

Is it worth the risk to allow users to interact with dynamic Library web pages by adding their own content? What could go wrong? Should we be totally risk-averse and walk away from Web 2.0 technologies “in case something goes wrong”? What are the risks if we do? How do we manage the risks of letting users talk to us?

I have to start with the tired but true cliche ‘we can’t afford not to take the risk’. The conflict I see is with large organisations with lots of rules and regs that are not flexible enough to allow experimentation.

I’d be fine with it, though I agree with Sarah, the culture here is a little risk-averse. I know we considered this at Warwick, in this respect considering allowing Amzon style ratings and reviews on books on the OPAC. The academic community were not keen on this, fearing reviews of their own works by their students so it was quashed.
